The peak spec has been to some extent abused by manufacturers stating enormous peak audio power whilst their amps are actually constructed with small power supplies unable to handle more than just several watts rms power.

 

Music and voice is not constant regarding volume. As such the peak power rating is still essential, though not as important as the rms power specification. Ideally the amplifier will show both the rms and peak power rating. Having a high peak power spec will guarantee adequate headroom for power peaks that are widespread in music signals. The most important reason is that audio signals will have short bursts of high power that the amplifier has to deal with. Rms power is measured with a uniform sine signal that hardly compares with a music signal in terms of the power envelope.

 

Typically the impedance of the loudspeakers that you attach to the amp will determine how much power the amplifier may output. Speaker impedance is measured in Ohms. Typically speakers have an impedance between 4 and 8 Ohms. An audio amplifier which has a set internal supply voltage is going to have a maximum output voltage swing that is restricted by that supply voltage. If you are driving an 8-Ohm speaker then the amplifier must provide two times the output voltage than when driving a 4-Ohm speaker to be able to output the same amount of wattage.
