Is 30 watts enough for a guitar amp?
I am interested in buying a Roland Cube 30X, but i am not sure if that is loud enough. I am in a band and we will be doing gigs.
I have a friend who bought a Roland Cube 30x thinking that 30 watts was enough. He plays rhythm guitar with a country and oldies band. They aren't particularly loud and play small clubs. He found the 30 watt model wasn't near loud enough and traded it back in for the 60 watt model.

For some reason (I've heard explanations) tube amps seem to have more apparent volume than solid state amps. A vintage 22 watt Fender Deluxe Reverb is the holy grail of small club amps, and my 40 watt Fender Super Reverb will make your ears bleed, but with solid state amps you need to be in the 60-100 watt range for gigging.
One last thought: another element to an amp's ability to be heard is how much air it can move. One 12" speaker can be loud but not project as well as 2-12" speakers because volume is all about making sound waves. Larger speaker area equals more waves. In this respect, more and larger speakers can play an important role. This all has to be balanced with weight, size and portability of course. For me, 1-12" or 1-15" is plenty. If you're into loud music, you may want a 2-12" combo amp. If more powerful amps are out of your price range, consider a used one.
