What to Look for in a Tribute Act
But what do general public think a tribute act is? I believe most people are probably much like myself in thinking if you went to see a Tom Jones tribute and he was a she with a piano doing her own rendition of Tom Jones' music, you would quite possibly think, "well she was nothing like Tom Jones" or, "what on earth was that!?" or just simply "I don't get it!" Well I'm afraid to tell you folks that according to wikipedia, (lets face it the only place people go for an explanation in this day and age) does not state that "Dom Jones" (and don't go googleing that guys, my female Tom Jones tribute artist is fictional) has to be reproducing the music accurately or even be the same sex as the original artist! But I, like many people have to say it is what we look for as the public when we see a so-called tribute act.
Is it just that we feel robbed paying eighty quid to see Tina Turner, so it's easy to see "Annabelle Does Turner" at The Kings Head for free? Or is it better than Karaoke, pool and pork scratchings on a night up the local? Will Great Aunt Mavis even notice that it isn't actually Mick Hucknall at her 90th? Does it matter that the Freddie Mercury doesn't really sound like him? Won't everyone come in my club anyway on New Years Eve? Well my naive little landlord friend, on New Years Eve they probably will still come in… This year. I'm a music fan and if I was paying anything below £500 for a tribute act, I would know I was making a rod for my own back! In this life one thing tends to be true in the majority of fields, you get what you pay for!
So if you are a busy landlord, you are lucky, you may be invited by the "Pay us more than this act is worth entertainment agency" to what they call a "showcase." If you decide to go don't get overly excited about meeting other landlords or watching an excellent evenings entertainment either, generally these so-called "showcases" tend to be the local social clubs excuse to watch a night of entertainment for absolutely nothing. It also tends to pull in the same amount of local residents as usual on a Wednesday night. Generally most of the acts advertised don't turn up, as it is not paid work for them. So the people you are left with are usually entertainers that are either related to the entertainment agency's family or just starting out and haven't yet worked out that it takes more than a wig and a pair of sunglasses to convince someone you are Lady Gaga or Meat Loaf.
Its is a waste of your time, the only relatives of this type of event to visit that may provide some talent are in Blackpool and central London, but you wont be invited you will have to google off your own back.
Alternatively you could watch the promo video. But remember that promo is a very clever aspect of the business. You can easily sing in a studio and be made to sound as pitch perfect as Charlotte Church, and this can then be easily synced up to a video of you singing on a black background or a star cloth, this footage can then be faded in and out of Robbie William's crowd at Knebworth! I see your right eyebrow raise and your jaw drop open, but yes these things are possible and happening day to day. Especially with it being so possible to buy a HD camcorder and a clever enough editing program for your PC or MAC!
To sum up I don't think I would ever book an act I hadn't seen live. The way to locate great acts is to find them initially and if you find them on an entertainment agency's site and you like the look of them, try and find their direct details because the saving you will make will be worth it.
Entertainment agencies are laughing financially from all the lazy people who will just swallow the charge while frustrated tribute and cabaret acts all over are racking their brains as to why people can't see that these agents do nothing for their commission from the start! You call them for Celine Dion, they supply you with Celine Dion number three if Celine one and Celine Two are already booked. I wouldn't charge my Nan a hundred pounds for directions to the nearest Tescos, without a care in the world as to whether it was an Extra, Metro or Express. Then proceed to do her shopping for her and over charge her at the end of it!
Something a lot of people don't know is a skill I learned with google. Say you are looking for Darren as Robbie, he is advertised as "Darren – A Tribute to Robbie Williams" but you can only find him on agency sites. Try typing him into google but not as "Darren, Robbie," type in "Darren – A Tribute to Robbie Williams" with the quotation marks, you may be surprised to see google then picks out that exact phrase and you are more likely to find Darren's own website.
To save on extortionate web design costs, some people are resulting to posting their acts on facebook, as pages or groups. So try Darren in the search bar of your facebook too. If you have the time and the act is playing locally, try and pop down to see them. I believe it's always better to try before you buy.
So, finally what to look for in the quality of your act. This is the big one, because you don't have to worry particularly about general public because they wont necessarily know, but watch out there could be a fan about, and if Elvis is raising the wrong lip they are bound to have something to say about it.
With so much footage of everybody and their talking dogs available at your fingertips from you tube, the best thing to do is a little research. It will take five minutes to watch Michael Jackson perform Billie Jean at the Motown 25th Special in 1983. Maybe then you can study a few more mannerisms in your potential act.
The key would probably be to find someone who seems to have a special quality compared to the rest, look at their experience, their previous clientele, have they worked for anybody impressive? How do they or, even better, their management sound like on the phone. Make sure you are not speaking to their Agent. Guaranteed you are not speaking to their agent! You are speaking to an entertainment agent!
Look at technical specifications, not many people supply them but if they do, it usually means they have had enough work to afford decent equipment. But of course google some of their speakers to find out if they are professional range. Things are looking up if they are!
Lighting, an interesting word. A couple of par cans and a revolving pair of disco balls is not lighting, when you begin seeing names such as Martin MAC 250, terms like that mean that you may get something elaborate but to be honest very few tribute acts are into lighting as it does always require another staff member to operate and a little, or a lot of homework.
In my professional opinion a true tribute act is a person with natural talent to impersonate a character, while also giving some of their personality on stage too. It is important to say to an audience, not in words but in actions, "I do not think I am Engelbert Humperdink, I am Jerry Jones and I am here to give you a taste of what a Humperdink do is like." The arrogant tributes do exist and they do think they are the stars, which is crazy and is the worst way to come across on stage. I believe a lot of this type of performer forgets that there is one of them and 300 of the audience.
Take care in what you book, don't use Entertainment Agencies and enjoy your act. I hope I have been of assistance.
