No Complaints With M-Audio Firewire Interface
If you're like I was, you're probably thinking what's the big deal about this interface from M-Audio. The fact that M-Audio makes it and they know their customers and what they need.
If you do have a budget of say about 2 thousand bucks then you could find a better quality interface than this one. Unfortunately, if we all had to spend that kind of money for every component we need our recording studio's would never get finished.
The Profire 2626 has a nice balance of features and quality and price. It usually sells for $699 but you can definitely look around and get it for a much better deal than that.
It's true that for a bit less money you can get an interface that sounds as good as this one but then you'd be missing the features.. such as:
Number of simultaneous recordable tracks is 26. If you're using the highest sample rates this may not always be the case..
Using the top settings of 24-bit/192kHz will lower your number of recordable tracks. Lowering the sample rate to 92 or 88.2 will also increase your track count. Depending on individual setups and setting there will be slightly different results.
it's got Firewire connectivity making for very low latency. Also every kind of connection any studio would need, 8 analog xlr mic inputs each with it's own pre-amp. World clock, MIDI, S/PDIF, and ADAT.
It can also be used as a standalone A./D converter and a simple but very nice preamp.
Still, my favorite feature is it's mixer, letting you create and save 8 stereo mixes which can all be called up at any time. This mixer is also a router capable of sending audio channels to the 26 hardware outs.
The two other things to mention are it's compatibility with either PC or Mac computers running all the major software programs like Pro Tools, Logic, Sonar, Cubase, Live, GarageBand etc. Versatility with features and a decent price to boot.
Maybe you've heard about a debate that is out there saying that Firewire will be replaced by USB 3.0… that will be a good thing if and when it happens but for now this firewire technology still rocks!
